In September 2020, the teaching of Relationships and Health Education was made statutory in Primary schools. At Pendle Primary Academy, this will be taught as part of the PSHE and Science curriculum, and will focus on the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults.
Details of the specific learning targets the children will be working on can be found on our Curriculum pages.
Our curriculum policies, including the school's RHE policy can be found here by clicking this link.
An important part of the Year 5 curriculum for PSHE and Science is about growing up and the changes that the human body goes through during puberty. These sessions are taught in the Autumn term.
The sessions will be taught separately for boys and girls, with a male member of staff teaching the boys and a female member of staff teaching the girls. The session will include the physical and emotional changes the human body goes through during puberty and for the girls, it will also cover the menstrual cycle and how to manage periods.
The presentations that will be used in the sessions can be found via links below. If you have any questions about the content of these sessions, please contact the school office and ask to speak with the Curriculum Design Leader, Miss Jermyn.

Schools are required to consult with parents when developing and reviewing their policies for relationships and health education, which will help to inform decisions on when and how certain content is covered. When and how content is taught is ultimately a decision for the academy, and consultation does not provide a parental veto on curriculum content.
To take part in our survey, please click here. Please note the survey is available to complete at any point, with no end date – responses will be reviewed periodically, and taken into account when the policy is reviewed each year.
